ASTRO is proud to partner with the Rhode Island Department of Education for our fourth year in the Advanced Course Network. This year we are offering more courses than ever before and we have some new community partners who have joined in. Harvest Kitchen will be hosting our Recipe for Success culinary arts program and A-Team construction is hosting a lead abatement program. In addition, we will be running our tried and true Audio Production and Adventures in Video courses. See below for more information.
RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
ASTRO has teamed up with RIDE and Harvest kitchen to offer: Recipe for Success. An in person, hands on learning experience in a commercial kitchen that will prepare students for a successful career as a prep cook. The 10 week class will focus on development of knife skills, cooking techniques, recipe implementation, food safety and sanitation. Students will be required to work individually and within a team. Upon successful completion, of this course students will earn a Food Handlers Certification, Allergen Certification, and a custom embroidered chef jacket. The course will be held at Harvest kitchen 2 Bayley St, Pawtucket, RI 02860 Saturdays 930am-130pm Start Date: March 6, 2021 End Date: May 8, 2021. This course is FREE to high school students enrolled in RI school districts participating in the Advanced Course Network.
ASTRO has teamed up with RIDE and A-TEAM CONTRACTING, LLC to offer this unique learning opportunity to RI high school youth interested in a career in a trade. Students will take a hands on approach to learning by performing basic skills in LEAD Containment, Cleaning, Painting, Basic Carpentry, basic Electrical and Landscaping. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a Renovator Remodelers Certificate. This will allow them to earn the potential of $15.00 per hour. Course will run Tues and Thursdays 3 pm – 5 pm from September 15, 2020-June 6, 2021 at Franks Rentals 2071 Plainfield Pike Johnston, RI. ADVENTURES IN VIDEO
ASTRO presents Adventures in Video. Students enrolled in this course will work hands-on with Apple iMovie software to learn all about the art of video production. Participants will be taught video shooting techniques, video editing skills, storyboard creation, scriptwriting, character development, and post production. The skills acquired in this program are universal to all video production ventures and will absolutely act as a springboard to any student who is thinking about pursuing a career/hobbie or higher education in filmmaking or internet content creation. Course will be held at ASTRO 120 Webster St Pawtucket, RI 02861 1/25/2021 to 5/8/2021. This course is FREE to middle and high school students enrolled in RI school districts participating in the Advanced Course Network.
ASTRO presents Audio Production. Students in this class will be introduced to the world of digital audio recording by learning how to operate Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Throughout the course, participants will create a song using MIDI and Audio recording equipment. As students experience different methods of recording music, they challenge themselves to think past the creative constraints of art to make an original piece. All hardware and software is provided, however access to a computer outside of the program is recommended. Course will be held at ASTRO 120 Webster St Pawtucket, RI 02861 9/14/2020 to 12/14/2020 Wednesday from 3-5:30 pm. This course is FREE to middle and high school students enrolled in RI school districts participating in the Advanced Course Network.
